Organic farming - repelling pests without the use of chemical pesticides
Organic farming (有機耕作) opposes the use of chemical pesticides because they are harmful to the environment and accumulate along food chains. Organic farmers make use of physical devices and certain farming practice to minimise the negative effect of pests. The inflated balloon (as shown below) has pattern that looks like the " eyes " of top predator and may potentially scare off bird pests. The hanging bottles reflect light and make noise to drive off insect pests since many are negatively phototactic. Old CD (yes, the computer disks) are sometimes hung around the field. Certain plant species (e.g. 萬壽菊) that emit an offensive smell for the pests are also planted around the field.
Essence :
1. No chemical pesticide(s)
2. No chemical / artificial / synthetic fertiliser
3. The practice of composting
4. The use of physical means and biological control to drive off pest(s).
